British Grand Prix: Zhou Guanyu 'conscious' after alarming Silverstone crash at start of race

July 03, 2022

The British Grand Prix was red-flagged on the first lap after Zhou Guanyu was launched upside down at the first bend at Silverstone.

Mercedes' George Russell and Williams' Alex Albon were also caught up in the alarming accident at the start of the race but the drivers appear to have escaped without suffering serious injuries.

Zhou's Alfa Romeo rolled over after the crash into the high-speed first Abbey corner and travelled upside down into the barriers at pace.

Sky's Ted Kravtiz caught a word across the pit-lane with Frederic Vasseur, Zhou Guanyu's team boss.

Vasseur said that Chinese rookie Zhou was okay and that he believes he was conscious throughout as the medical teams took care and time to extract him from the car before he was taken away on a stretcher.

An FIA statement also confirmed this: "The FIA advises that following the start of the race, emergency crews were immediately in attendance and the drivers of car 23 (Albon) and car 24 (Zhou) have been taken to the medical centre.

"Both drivers were conscious and will be evaluated at the medical centre. Further updates will be given in due course."

It later emerged that Albon was being taken to hospital for further checks.

Russell was quickly out of his car after the incident and appeared unhurt as he went over to check on Zhou, but he was unable to restart the race.

There was also another incident at Silverstone following the red flag when a number of protesters stormed onto the track, before being quickly removed.

An FIA statement read: "We can confirm that after the red flag, several people attempted to enter the track. These people were immediately removed and the matter is now being dealt with by the local authorities."
