Cameron Norrie reaches Wimbledon quarter-finals after beating Tommy Paul

July 03, 2022

British number one Cameron Norrie is through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals after beating 30th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets.

Norrie beat the American 6-4 7-5 6-4 in a victory he later deemed to be "pretty crazy".

His victory made him only the fifth British man overall to reach the last-eight stage at the Championships and the first since two-time champion Andy Murray in 2017.

"To make the quarters for the first time, in front of my family and friends here from college is so special," Norrie said on court amid loud cheers from the crowd.

"In a huge match, to play the way I did, was really good. To execute everything. I really enjoyed it. It is pretty crazy, I have a lot of feelings."

The ninth seed had eased past another American, Steve Johnson, in the third round and he built on that with another strong performance on Sunday afternoon on Court One.

His win comes hours after fellow Brit Heather Watson crashed out of Wimbledon after losing to Jule Niemeier in her fourth-round match.

The British number four lost in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4, to the 22-year-old German.

She had previously defeated Niemeier in their only previous meeting, earlier this season at Monterrey, in a final set tie-break.

But it was a flat first set from Watson who swatted the net in frustration after missing a volley to bring up set point.

It was Watson's best showing in any Grand Slam but a quarter-final spot proved beyond the 30-year-old.

Watson had slipped to 121st in the world rankings and this year marked her 12th Wimbledon.

She had played on every day of the tournament so far.
